(1995) concluded that SRE1 is a hypertrophy regulatory element that activates specific contractile protein genes to produce more mRNA in response to overload conditions. Serum response factor (SRF) is a transcription factor that homodimerizes to SRE1 on the skeletal alpha-actin gene (Lee et al. 1992). Increases in the quantity (Carson et al. 1995), and potentially the post-translational status (Fluck et al. 1999), of SRF were noted in hypertrophying muscles. An increase in SRF transcriptional activity should enhance transcription of skeletal alpha-actin mRNA. Therefore, it is likely that during the late phases of a hypertrophic stimulus, transcription of the alpha-actin gene is an important contributor to muscle hypertrophy."
