For this purpose, A549 cells were incubated in various sequences of normoxic and hypoxic (1% O2) intervals (Fig. 1A) as follows: normoxia (N), hypoxia for 2 h (H2), hypoxia for 2 h followed by reoxygenation for 2 h (H2R), intermittent hypoxia for twice 2 h interrupted by 2 h of normoxia (IH4), IH4 followed by 2 h of reoxygenation (IH4R), intermittent hypoxia for three times 2 h interrupted twice by 2 h of normoxia (IH6), and continuous hypoxia for 6 h (H6). HIF-1A was most strongly induced in H6 and IH6....Expression of both Nrf2 and Trx1 was upregulated in IH4R and IH6.....Expression of the NADPH oxidase subunit NOX1 was enhanced in IH4, IH4R, and IH6 compared to N.
