Quiescent A549 cells were grown as 3-D cultures on collagen and treated with 1 lM nicotine or 100 ng/ml (equivalent to 2.38 nM) VEGF. Figure 1e shows that the cells treated with nicotine acquired elongated migratory morphology relative to control cells. The angiogenic factor VEGF was taken as the positive control for the assay, and similar morphological changes were observed in both the cases.
