In 2006, Baugh et al. [57] further revealed a possible role of MIF under hypoxic conditions. They describe HIF-1 as a potent inducer of MIF expression in hypoxia. Interestingly, these data were complemented by the works of Welford et al. [58] . They described the importance of HIF-1 in preventing cell senescence in a fibroblast model. Using HIF-1 knockout mice, they were able to show that under aerobic conditions lack of HIF-1 resulted in accelerated cellular aging and decreased cell proliferation under hypoxic conditions.
